The Cover Wars: The Naming/Gift

Rea of Rea's Reading and Reviews and I decided to get together to do a weekly meme where we would compare covers of the UK editions of books with those of the US editions.
The aim of this is to just have a bit of fun. We put ourselves in the position where we see both of these books side by side in the bookstore. Which would we choose? Why that one and not the other?

This week, we will be comparing the UK and US covers of The Naming/Gift by Alison Croggon this sounds very good and it has magic in it, I have just marked it as to read on GR because it sounds very good.

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK version.

Tara says: I don't really know if I have seen either of these books. I may have glanced at the pink one before but I am not sure. First of all the titles and their respective cover art go well together. If the UK version was called The Naming or if the US version was called The Gift I would be totally confused as to why. I’ve found that for most books out there the cover art is of a girl or a boy or both. For this reason, the UK version seems different and I feel it shows more of what the book is about. Also the UK version stands out so much better and it’s bright pink! So I am going with the UK version.

Rea says: This is another one where there’s absolutely no contest for me. I don’t like the style of the US cover. I don’t like the depiction of the girl’s face or how things appear to be a bit smudged. The UK cover is really very pretty when you see it face to face. Minus the detailed map in the background, it’s fairly simple. As a fan of fantasy ever since I can remember, the UK cover calls to me much more than the US version. In fact, I think that if I was faced with the US cover in the bookstore, I’d pass it by. Obviously, I didn’t do so with the UK cover as I’ve read the book twice now. UK for me.

Score:

Week 6:     US: 1    UK: 2    Draw :2

Review of Switched (Trylle Trilogy #1) by Amanda Hocking

Switched (Trylle Trilogy #1)Description
When Wendy Everly was six-years-old, her mother was convinced she was a monster and tried to kill her. It isn't until eleven years later that Wendy finds out her mother might've been telling the truth.

With the help of Finn Holmes, Wendy finds herself in a world she never knew existed - and it's one she's not sure if she wants to be a part of.

My Thoughts
I think I have known about this book for a while but I didn't have the money to read it and I didn't know my sister had it on her kindle. The cover is very interesting and I have saw other covers as well which is I think better. The description is short but sweet. Overall I think its going to be a good read.

I started reading it on my friends iPod which I am happy about, but as I got half way through I found out that my sister has it and so I switched to her old kindle. This is a very interesting but different book, I felt it had a lot of amazing parts but something was missing, I'm sure of it. The storyline is interesting and kept me wanting to know more about the characters, the truth and how it was all going to work out. The pace of the book is okay but I felt it could of been a little better, the grammar and spelling were great to me and I understood everything. The POV is focused around Wendy the main character.

Wendy is the main character and I do like her I really do, but not as much as I have liked other main characters in other books. Sometimes I felt like she always wanted her own way, she would do anything for it, but sometimes she just seems like a spoilt girl. I know she has went through a lot as a young girl and still is but sometimes the way she acts is un called for. I like how brave and kind she is sometimes. She sticks up for herself and she's not afraid to go with what she knows is right even if there is consequences.
Finn, well I didn't like him at first and then I liked him, and then I stopped liking him again and I'm hoping if I read the next book I can like him again. He has to protect Wendy in this book, but I feel there's more to that. He does as he is told, and he never tries to do what he wants to do, and if he does its rare. I do really want to like him, but I feel I cant, with what happened in the book.
Elora, well I don't like her, I know she's Queen and there is rules to go by and everything but she never shows any love at all. I feel she doesn't care at times, but then in other times I know she does.
Rhys is the only character I actually loved, he tried to tell Wendy things, he made her feel comfortable and relaxed but he isn't mentioned as much which I wished he was. I loved his whole character and how he does anything to protect Wendy and make her feel happy.
There is more characters but its hard for me to see. There is characters who I like, and characters who I hate, but even with the characters I hate it makes this book a good book. It would of been boring if I loved every single character.

My overall opinion of this book is I loved it, but felt something was missing but still haven't figured that bit out.
I would recommend this book to people ho love YA and like a good book.

I used to this before.. so I decided to try it again.

Q: Activity!!! Take a picture or describe where you love to read the most…?

A: I love to read anywhere that is comfy, but because I share a bedroom I hardly have a chance to read there, so I would probably say my sitting room, where I will sit or lay on the sofa and read.

Review of Aladdin's Samovar by Lauren Sweet

Aladdin's Samovar
Description
A nice, normal, boring life—that’s all Amber Polaski ever wanted. One where she’s not unchaining her flaky New Age mom from endangered trees, bailing her out of jail, or getting dragged to naked pagan rituals. But when Amber finds a sexy genie in her antique brass samovar, any hope of normal goes up in smoke.

It’s just one tiny little wish—to find her long-lost father. What could go wrong?

Plenty. Dad shows up, all right—with a computer drive full of stolen data and angry mobsters hot on his trail. Now Amber has Fugitive Dad holed up in her Manville, NJ duplex, fending off the Mafia on one side and the FBI on the other. And she has Jasper the genie lounging in her blue plush recliner, conjuring chocolate chip cookies and passing himself off as her boyfriend. While Jasper is trying to tempt Amber with more disastrous wishes—and his seriously hot thousand-year-old body—Amber and her mom are forced to fight off Mafia assassins with nothing but chutzpah and household appliances.

It’s time for Amber to call in the B-team: Iggy the homeless dwarf, Tim the ecoterrorist, and Wanda the Fairy Dogmother with her pack of Happy Puppies. Together, they need to save Dad before the Mob makes him disappear again—permanently

My Thoughts
I got this for free because the Author contacted me asking for me to read it and then review it. Before I accept I always read the description because if it doesn't sound like something I wont enjoy why both reading it. So I read the description and I was like yes it sounds great. The cover is very different to any I have seen and it seems funny and interesting. If I saw it in a shop I definitely would of been drawn to it.

I actually really liked this very much, it had mostly everything I wanted and it got me reading it whenever I was bored or just felt down. This made me laugh at times and smiled at time, the emotion in this book is just greatly put out, I felt Ambers emotion throughout the whole book and I just loved it. The storyline is something I have never heard of in my life, it was amazing and the ideas in this book is great. There wasn't just humour in this book, it also had some action in it which was very well written. This whole book was very well written and I just loved how it kept pulling me in to read it. It was that good that I was reading this while watching TV and I mostly focused on the book. The POV is focused around Amber who is the main character of the book.

On to the characters...
Amber is the main character and she plays a great part in this book. I feel everything she does in this book is well thought and I feel she does it because she wants to, not because she was told. How she deals with some situations is great and I would love to be as brave as she is. I really liked her, and I feel if she were a real person and I knew her, we would probably get on well and be friends.
Jasper is the genie in witch I would say changed everything for amber, she makes 1 wish and its only because she has to for jasper to go away. But that one wish changes everything and to help her she need to get him back. Jasper is so funny and I think through the whole book I just wanted to pull him out of the book and hug him or something. If I could wish for something from him, it would be for him to stay and make me laugh everyday.
Her Mother is so crazy and weird but I really did like her, she is different to any mother I have read about in any other books. She does what she wants to, she believes in what she wants to say and in the end I just love her to bits.
Her Dad, well I didn't really like him. He brought all of this disaster, he lies and to me he just annoyed me. I am glad that he cared for her and everything but if he just listened to his daughter than half of the disaster that happened wouldn't of happened. He did make the book more interesting so I am glad he was who he was.
There is other characters but I didn't think there was much to say about them.  The people who were part of the Mafia was evil, but then sometimes really funny. I really enjoyed all of the characters for different reasons.

My overall opinion of this book is I loved it so much and I want to thank the author for letting me read and review this book.
I recommend this book to anyone who loves a good laugh and who would try any kind of book.

Review of The End of the World (Skulduggery Pleasant #6.5) by Derek Landy

Skulduggery and Valkyrie are back, in an exclusive World Book Day novelette, set after the momentous events of Death Bringer…
The End of the WorldDescription
Hey, punks! Skulduggery and Valkyrie are about to make your day…

15-year-old Ryan is running away from home, looking for escape and adventure. But unfortunately, sometimes people DO get what they wish for. Ryan hasn’t gone far before he is set upon by a bunch of scary, nihilistic punk-sorcerers who need him to set off a doomsday device that will destroy the planet and everyone on it. Fun!

Riding to the rescue, however, is a certain skeleton detective and his teenage partner/combat accessory. Now Skulduggery and Valkyrie only have a few hours to figure out what's going on, while saving Ryan and – incidentally – the whole world.

And all that time, the punk-sorcerors are closing in…

(I am going to be doing this review a little different as this is a short novlette)

My Thoughts
I am so glad that Derek Landy decided to do this, as I was in need for some Skulduggery fun.
I know this is a short book but I really enjoyed it.
I felt this had a great storyline and great ides for such a short book.
The way it was BOOM right into the storyline, there was no slow waiting for action, it was just action.. action and well more action.
As in the other books by Derek Landy, the book has a lot of humour in it, which made me laugh a lot and I smile throughout most of the book. He managed to put emotion into the book and I actually felt every little bit of emotion towards the characters even thought I hardly know them.
The characters are portrayed in a very good way. Valkyrie is still the kick ass girl who I love so much. Skulduggery is still a funny skeleton who brings laughter into the book. The main character Ryan is a good characters and he was also funny in time.

My overall opinion of this book is, I loved it so much and I can't wait for the 7th book from Derek Landy :)
I recommend this book to Skulduggery Pleasant fans and who love a short book.

The Cover Wars: Haunting Violet

Rea of Rea's Reading and Reviews and I decided to get together to do a weekly meme where we would compare covers of the UK editions of books with those of the US editions.
The aim of this is to just have a bit of fun. We put ourselves in the position where we see both of these books side by side in the bookstore. Which would we choose? Why that one and not the other?

This week, we will be comparing the UK and US covers of Haunting Violet by Alyxandra Harvey because we have both read this. I loved the book so much, and I loved how different it was to the other books I was reading before this.

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK
version.

Tara says: This is a really hard one, because i like both covers. The US one shows a girl as does the UK one, they both look a little creepy and haunting so that goes well with the title. Both covers have a hint of purple for Violet, and they both tell a little about what the book is about. In the book 'water' is mentioned a lot so that is the only reason why I'm going with the US version.

Rea says: I find that I’m torn about this one. Initially, I was much more attracted to the UK version – there’s something about the purple and black together with the mist coming off the water and the bare trees that gives it a very appealing gothic look. Having read the book, though, I’m not sure Violet ever wears the black dress depicted on the cover so it’s just there for atmospheric effect. The US cover is much more true to the events of the book. The girl depicted is the one who was drowned in the pond. Unfortunately, she doesn’t look drowned. She looks like she’s gone for a float and her hair looks dry, which kind of ruins the effect. After some contemplation, I’m going to go with my initial preference here. UK for me.

Score:

Week 5:     US: 1    UK: 2    Draw:1

Review of Tegan's Blood (The Ultimate Power Series, #1) by L.H Cosway

Tegan's Blood (The Ultimate Power Series, #1)
Description
Her heart is broken and bleeding. But her blood is going to get her into trouble.
Tegan wonders if it is possible to die of a broken heart. For over two months she has grieved and not left the confines of her apartment in Tribane city. Following her friend Nicky’s advice, she is now going to step outside and start her life over again.
On her very first night outdoors, Tegan joins her friends at the Crimson club where she draws the attention of the mysterious owner, Ethan Cristescu. She is not entirely sure why this beautiful man is so interested in her, but she has a feeling there is something not quite right about him.
As she falls deeper into Ethan’s world, Tegan makes some shocking discoveries about who she really is, and finally uncovers the true face of her home city. Tribane is inhabited by vampires, dhamphirs, slayers, witches and warlocks. The problem is, they all want Tegan for her very special blood.
She doesn't want to hide again, but she also doesn’t want these creatures to capture her. Tegan has a difficult decision to make. Should she run away or stand and fight?

My Thoughts
I was asked by the Author to read and then review this and I may of said this before but I love it when the author takes time to email you and give you a copy of there book for free, it makes you feel some what special and I was pleased to get this. The title and cover is very interesting and would of drew me in to read it whether or not the author asked me to. The description of the book is something I would normally go far so I was very interested in this book.

I am so happy I got this book because I loved it so much, I don't even think there's a bad thing to say about this book, it was really that good. First of all the description, title and cover live up to the book, it kept me reading and I really didn't want to put the book down. The storyline is amazing and I loved how it kept going and more stuff got added to the book and the more that happened the more I was keen to read on. The ideas in this books is really great. This is such and easy read and I feel anyone who loves this kind of book would be able to read it within a few days if they have the time to read it. The POV is focused around Tegan the main character which I was glad.

There is many characters in this book, and of course I will talk about the ones I feel played a main part in the book.
Tegan as the main character played the biggest part in this book, she has had a terrible past, but she's ready to try and move on and then everything starts getting even worse. Vampires.. Warlocks and other things starts appearing in her life which makes her think she could just hide in her flat and stay there. She never thought of herself to be special but she is. I loved her so much, how she dealt with problems how she wished this wasn't happening where in some books the women who are in danger crave it. She was an enjoyable character and I really want to know more about her.
Ethan to me is so full of himself but he is very funny and I really loved him for who he was and what he tries to do throughout the book. For a vampire he is one good guy who cares about Tegan. I really did love him to bits and I feel I may be falling for him (You know.. like a fictional boyfriend. why not?).
Marcel & Gabriel owns a shop in which Tegan gets a job there, they can sense something is different to her. I think in the book I prefer Gabriel to Marcel, because of way they both acted.
Rita at first I really didn't like, she was kinda self centred and moody and didn't even give Tegan a chance. As the story went on and she plays more of a character I started to love her as a character. As Tegan was liking her so was I.
The rest of the other characters all played there characters very well and sometimes I was kinda scared of them, the emotions in this book actually made me feel what they felt, I swear I cried during 1 bit of the book.

My overall opinion of this book is I loved it and I really wouldn't say anything negative about it. I have finally thought of something bad about this book.. THAT IT ENDED :O hope the second book comes out soon :).
I recommend this book to people who love Vampire, Warlocks, Witches and other things.. also people who love YA ! :D

Tegan's Blood (The Ultimate Power Series, #1)
'He looks up at me and smiles warmly. "Hello Tegan," he says. "How are you this morning?"
"I'm good, a little tired though." I reply, practically gawking at his dark green eyes. He must have noticed because he averts his gaze back to the book he'd been reading, I have a thing about eyes, I don't know why, I like to admire unusual colours and shapes.'

I have read this and a review is to come. I loved this so much and I really liked the storyline and the characters. It was well thought of and I really would recommend you to read it :)

Review of LightMasters: Number 13 by M.G Wells

LightMasters: Number 13
Description
Orphaned after her parents' tragic death, Jessica Wyrd feels uneasy living with her gassy grandparents. With few friends and constant teasing by her hardcore schoolmates, this Georgia girl feels like an outcast living in a small town in upstate New York.
Anxious about being forgotten on her 13th birthday, Jessica is lured into the forest by a strange spiral light. She encounters three Lighmasters, who convince her that she has unique gifts. Intrigued, she's transported to another dimension where she is tested for her courage and strength.
Things change drastically when Jessica returns to earth. During school, her reality shifts and people start turning into reptilian monsters. The leader of the Lightmasters tells her she's needed by the alliance to defeat an invisible alien beast, who feeds off fear.
How can Jessica conquer her own fears and help rid the world of a wicked enemy who hates humans?

My Thoughts
This was free on Amazon, but the main reason why I read it was because it is a group read in a group called Basically Books on goodreads. The simplicity of the cover is intriguing and interesting. The description makes me think its going to be an amazing read so with that I feel its going to be a good book.

First things first, I loved the storyline and the concept of the book, I really loved some of the characters and how they acted in the book. It was a short but sweet book. Though I felt very disconnected sometimes, and I felt it moved on far to quickly. I didn't feel all the emotions in the book which I should have felt. I also felt some things could of been described more. The text was simple and easy to read. I really do feel this is more for younger readers because I just wanted to go down to a school or something to read it in front of some children.

Jessica is the main character and I liked her as a character but I felt she didn't know what to do, what to think and what to feel. I mean if I was told I was special or to go to a certain place, I wouldnt just do it, I would think about why, what will happen etc. I felt very disconnected with her but I still no matter what liked her for her bravery and courage throughout the book.
Her grandparents are so mysterious and strange in a way I really cant explain. They were there but then they weren't. It wasn't until half way through the book that they actually became more involved in the book.
Her friends or enemies I'm not quite sure who's who, I was very confused because one minute she's friend with one person then the next they are enemies and I didn't see this happen it just did. Some friends were actually not in the book really until the end and then the storyline there was good but weird.
There is more characters but I feel I can't really say much about them.

My overall opinion is I loved the concept of the book and the ideas, but I felt it could of been set out better.
I recommend this book to younger readers, and maybe people who would read anything.

Review of The Iron Thorn (Iron Codex #1) by Caitlin Kittredge

The Iron Thorn (Iron Codex, #1)Description
In the city of Lovecraft, the Proctors rule and a great Engine turns below the streets, grinding any resistance to their order to dust. The necrovirus is blamed for Lovecraft's epidemic of madness, for the strange and eldritch creatures that roam the streets after dark, and for everything that the city leaders deem Heretical—born of the belief in magic and witchcraft. And for Aoife Grayson, her time is growing shorter by the day.
Aoife Grayson's family is unique, in the worst way—every one of them, including her mother and her elder brother Conrad, has gone mad on their 16th birthday. And now, a ward of the state, and one of the only female students at the School of Engines, she is trying to pretend that her fate can be different.

My Thoughts
My sister bought this as she does with other books which I have read. After she finished she told me how good it was and kept insisting for me to read it. The cover is very dark and mysterious and the girl is clearly the main character Aoife. The description.. cover, title and the recommendation from my sister is enough for me to read it.

I absolutely loved this book, it had everything a good book should have, Great grammar and spellings, an interesting storyline in which I was glued to right from the start. A captivating scenario and also some great characters. I read about 2 chapters and I just wanted to read more, the way it started and the way it continued was immense and I loved everything what happened. The pace of the book was correct and easy to read and understand. The POV is centred around Aoife and what happens to her throughout the whole book.

I loved all of the characters in different ways, though some I loved then started to dislike, and some I disliked and then started to love, and there's the main character Aoife who I loved throughout the whole book.
The main character Aoife is such a good character throughout the whole book. She does what she thinks is best and she doesn't always follow the rules to get where she wants to be. Her love for her brother is very heart warming and the fact she would do anything to help him just reminds me that some people would risk anything to protect or save someone they love. I really enjoyed her attitude throughout the book and the fact even if she knew she shouldn't do a certain thing, is she was intrigued she would do it.
Her friend Cal is very understanding of her but then he started getting very annoying and kept mentioning things to her which would annoy her. He didn't understand some things which he should be able to. Though i loved the fact he cared about her. Overall I thought he was an all right character.
Dean is also a main character who I really hated to start with, he kept saying 'Doll' and stuff and it was getting very annoying. I felt he was only doing it to get something from it, but as the book went on I started to like him. He cares for Aoife and I felt he understood her more than her friend Cal.
There is many other characters but these 3 were the main ones. I loved most of the characters for different reasons, whether it was because they were evil or good. Most of the characters were very interesting and I liked that, because if the characters are boring then the book will get boring whether or not the storyline is or not.

My overall opinion of this book is, I loved it so much the characters, storyline and pace of the book makes it one of the best books ever. The ending kept me asking for more, and I am so happy my sister has ordered the second one.
I will recommend this book to ALL YA lovers and people who want a good book to read.

Get A Taste: LightMasters: Number 13

Rea of Rea's Reading and Reviews and I often read very different books but sometimes find interesting new books to potentially add to the ever-growing monsters that our TBR piles have morphed into. However, we know that we do not have 100% the same taste and we wanted another way of getting a look at these books...

Do you ever feel like getting a bit of a taster for a book you’ve been thinking of reading but aren’t fully sold on yet? Do you feel like sharing a taster for your current read with the world? Well, here’s your chance.

This week its:
Page number: 90
Kindle/ebook: 12%

My Teaser:
LightMasters: Number 13
'I kiss her watery cheek, and she smiles.
"what was that?" Gwendolyn asks.
"A kiss."
"what is a kiss?" she questions as if she's never been kissed.
"Just an expression of gratitude and admiration"'.

I have recently read this book, and I rated it 3 stars it wasn't the best but it certainly wasn't the worst. I loved the storyline and some of the characters. Everyone should check it out, because its an easy simple read.

My goodreads :D
