Q:
What writing device or trick most irritates you when reading a book? For example, if an author employs an omnipotent narrator that is sometimes considered bad form.

A: I have to agree with one of Parajunkee's points about the love at first sight. I mean I understand in some books its meant to be like that as in.. the people were made to love each other at first look.. but some books... its just annoying and its un real that every book should have that. Overall I think I have read like 200 books or something that involves that.
Also I don't like it.. when I read a book where the POV is centred among the person and then it suddenly switches to narrative form.. I mean pick one and stick to one.

So what about all of you?

  1. I agree with both your points. I'm fine with a book being in the head of two different characters and swapping each chapter but any more than two is a bit much. Also changing from first person to third or changing your tense (past to present/future) is not cool.

  4. Insta-love is extremely annoying. And I do not think it ever works. Not even in books where they're supposed to know they're meant for each other because of something like soul-mates and having been together in multiple past lives. It's just boring and I've never read a book where it works!

It just doesn't work. Ever. I will continue to think that unless I can be proven wrong. But I'll be honest, I'm not up for reading a tonne of books with 'insta-love' just to find one where it works...

  5. Insta-love is so horrible. I just don't get why so many authors employ it. The POV thing is actually okay for me. Look at how amazingly Stephen King uses it. But the "amazingly" is probably the problem: most authors don't employ it as well as he can.

  8. Agreed! If every author eliminated insta-love and stuck to one POV, there would be very few terrible books out there! :D New follower here via GFC. My FFs are at Musings on Fantasia and LKHill. Happy Friday! :D

  13. Hello. New follower here! The insta love has definitely been a hot topic on this blog hop. I agree that it gets old after a while and unless the story is only about this insta love thing then it should be left out. Thanks for sharing!

Also, I am giving away a Kindle or Nook (winners choice) on my blog if you are interested. The contest ends tomorrow at midnight!
