The Cover Wars: The Book Thief

Rea of Rea's Reading and Reviews and I decided to get together to do a weekly meme where we would compare covers of the UK editions of books with those of the US editions.

The aim of this is to just have a bit of fun. We put ourselves in the position where we see both of these books side by side in the bookstore. Which would we choose? Why that one and not the other?

This week, we will be comparing the UK and US covers of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak. This book is one of my favourites. I didn't think I would like it, its not my usual taste, but it was brilliant :).

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK
version.

Tara says: This is so easy for me. The US one is good, but boring and doesn’t really capture my attention. The UK one is amazing, I love the fact the cover is all crumpled up and old fashioned to go with the fact this story is set during World War 2. UK has won for me. 

Rea says: This is another case where I have a clear favourite. I do like the imagery of the US cover with the dominoes that are all about to set off a chain reaction. But it just doesn’t hold a candle to the UK cover art. That image of Liesel dancing with Death is one my favourite cover images ever. It is so very poignant and expresses so much in so very little. UK all the way.

Review of The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

Description
Story of a young girl growing up in Nazi Germany narrated by Death. Told from a perspective of an fascinated observer, the girl's interaction with family and friends against the background of war and the Holocaust is told in a straightforward manner that captures the amazing capacity of humans to survive and support one another - or not.

My Thoughts 
I got this off Amazon for £5.00 and it was my first time ordering from online. The reason I bought this is on a group on goodreads the mods loved the book and rated it 5 stars so I just had to buy it and read it. The cover shows 2 characters.

I have never read anything by Markus Zusak ever before so I didn't know what to expect or if it were going to be interesting and good. The book is narrated by death and throughout the whole book things were mentioned which hasn't actually happened then went back to the current time, so on . I like the style of writing and I like the little images throughout the book, it kept things interesting. The emotion through out the book was so utterly breathtaking and amazing, the plot of it all was a great plot and I loved many characters. This book made me cry at points throughout the story and the end. (not saying why :P).

The book has many characters but I only want to write about some of them, the ones who I think played an important role in the story. Liesel is such a brave, amazing strong character and of young age. She does what she thinks write and I love her interest in books, or more importantly words. She was so passionate at learning to read and she was such a helpful little girl. Rudy who is her best friend is a nice, kind and silly boy but I loved that about him and he did anything he could to help Liesel and all he wanted was just a kiss. Hans who is Liesel fostered father is such an amazing, pure heated man who loved Liesel so much and helped her to learn to read and helped her through her bad nights. Then came Max who was a good listener to Liesel and they just cared for each other and helped each other through both of their bad nights and times. These characters has such a great impact in the story but I can't ignore the narrator now can I?.No. Death is who Narrates the book and I feel sorry for him, he has to watch everyone die. I loved how he grown kind of attached to Liesel and I felt a strong bond between them both. To me Rudy and Max was my favourite characters.

My overall opinion on this book is that it is heart braking, emotional, beautiful and angry. I loved this book though it is not something I would of thought of reading.
