The Cover Wars: Cross My Heart

Rea of Rea's Reading and Reviews and I decided to get together to do a weekly meme where we would compare covers of the UK editions of books with those of the US editions.

The aim of this is to just have a bit of fun. We put ourselves in the position where we see both of these books side by side in the bookstore. Which would we choose? Why that one and not the other?

This week, we will be comparing the UK and US covers of Cross My Heart by Sasha Gould

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK
version.

Tara says: Both covers are completely different apart from one thing, the MASK on the girl’s face. I like the colourful idea with the UK one, but then I like the dark looking idea with the US one. Just because to me it would stand out more on a shelf I will go with the UK one.

Rea says: Actually this one is an easy choice for me as well. Though the UK cover is pretty in its own right, it just doesn’t attract me like the US one does. There must be something about black covers with a masked individual as the only real imagery. I have a few like that and I love them all. This is another one that would immediately draw me to it in a shop. US for me.

The Cover Wars: The Masque of the Red Death

Rea of Rea's Reading and Reviews and I decided to get together to do a weekly meme where we would compare covers of the UK editions of books with those of the US editions.

The aim of this is to just have a bit of fun. We put ourselves in the position where we see both of these books side by side in the bookstore. Which would we choose? Why that one and not the other?

This week, we will be comparing the UK and US covers of The Masque of the Red Death by Bethany Griffin.

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK
version.

Tara says: Now... This one is a hard one: they book look amazing. The UK one has the mask in which it says in the title. Then the US one has a woman who looks very intriguing. In the end I am going to go with the one that stands out the most to me if I look at them both in front of me. That would be the US one.

Rea says: This is a hard one. Both are beautiful in their own ways. Even though it’s obvious that the mask has been photo shopped onto the cover on the UK version, it still gets a very potent message across with such simple imagery. The US cover is so very pretty in another way. This is the version I have and the quote on the front, “haunting and beautiful”, fits this cover as well. If I saw them side by side, I’m honestly not sure which one I’d be drawn to first, but I’m going to go with the US cover this week.

The Cover Wars: Poison Study

Tara says: Easy choice for me. The US one looks like it’s an old book and I really don’t like it for some reason. The UK one is the one I love it has everything it needs to show me what the book will involve. I think UK wins J

Rea says: I have a different version of Poison Study, which is no longer available, and that one is actually my favourite! However, of the two here, I’m not really fond of the US cover. It doesn’t stand out so much. The beautiful purple colour of the UK cover stands out among all the other fantasy covers on the shelves. Even if it’s not as pretty as my old UK cover, it’s still UK for me.

The Cover Wars: Throne of Glass

The aim of this is to just have a bit of fun. We put ourselves in the position where we see both of these books side by side in the bookstore. Which would we choose? Why that one and not the other?

This week, we will be comparing the UK and US covers of Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas.

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK
version.

Tara says: I like both covers, but the US one is just like other covers out there whereas the UK one is a little different. The UK cover actually made me smile as it’s showing me what the girl is, and what she does, without even reading the blurb. UK WINS!

Rea says: This one is a fairly easy one for me. The US one is not all that extraordinary, though I do really like the castle in the background – even if it does look more like a ghost castle than one made of glass. The UK one, however, is original and beautiful. This is the one that I have and the back cover actually shows the same character facing away but wearing a dress now. This cover stands out and I fell in love with it the moment I first laid eyes on it. UK for me.

The Cover Wars: Fateful

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK
version.

Tara Says: They are both very different. The UK one has a girl in a red dress on a ship, where the US one has a girl in the water. I don’t really like either but I do love the dress that the girl has on in the UK one, so UK for me!
Rea says: This is where I show my materialism. The UK cover appeals to me more and I’m fairly sure it’s all about that red dress. It doesn’t help that the US cover isn’t very accurate – there should be ripples about her (she does look like she’s wading forwards) and her dress should have water soaked up beyond the water level. Definitely UK for me.

The Cover Wars: Forgotten

Tara Says: They are both very different so to me it just goes on whether I would pick up the US one or the UK one if they were next to each other… I would probably pick up the UK one as it is pretty and I like the fact that one of the girls is in black and white and the other one is in colour. So UK for me :D

Rea says: In all honesty, the US cover doesn’t really appeal to me very much. In contrast, I do like the imagery of the UK cover – of the past in black and white (shrouded in mystery?) and the future in colour (clarity?). UK for me.

The Cover Wars: The Night Watch

The aim of this is to just have a bit of fun. We put ourselves in the position where we see both of these books side by side in the bookstore. Which would we choose? Why that one and not the other?

This week, we will be comparing the UK and US covers of The Night Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko. 

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK
version.

Tara Says: I like them both. The UK one is blue, different and it stands out, the US one is orangey-red and has a birdy on the cover. I will go with the UK one just because it stands out more.


Rea says: This is another one where there’s very little contest for me. The US cover does capture a side of the story but I don’t really like the art – it’s certainly not the sort of cover that will draw my attention when I’m browsing the shelves. The UK cover art, on the other hand, is the sort of thing that I find really very appealing. The colours are just the sort of thing to catch my eye as well and I feel that the art really suits a setting in a Moscow that is just emerging from Soviet repression. UK for me.

Tara Says: I like them both so very much and they are very appealing. The UK one is blue, it has a little house and it just makes me want to read it. The US one is simple and yet I feel as if it’s going to be a great book. Just because it’s simple yet eye-catching, and I have seen it so many times, I will go with the US one.
Rea says: Both of these covers are very appealing. They both catch my eye and leave me wanting to crack open the book. This said, I adore the simplicity of the US cover. US for me.

The Cover Wars: The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters

This week, we will be comparing the UK and US covers of The Glass Books of the Dream Eaters by Gordon Dahlquist.

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK

version.

Tara Says: I don’t really like either cover. The US one has misty weather and a train track with people there, which seems very boring to me. The UK one is a lot more interesting; it’s bold and in your face and the mask on the front is very appealing. UK for me.
Rea says: This is one of my absolute favourite books. It won’t appeal to all readers, but it is so very different and a fabulous gentle fantasy / steampunk. Both covers depict something from the book: the US one has the train that they’re always taking to get to the mansion where the secret society holds all their meetings; the UK one has the masks that everyone’s always wearing to conceal their identity. I think the UK one fits the feel of the story better, and obviously it worked for me as it’s a book that caught my eye when I was browsing for one to just pick up at random at an airport. UK for me.

Tara’s Says: The US one has girl and a gate and that’s it for me, nothing stands out and it looks like any other book with a girl on the cover. The UK one is so pretty with the rose and then at the top there is that blood dripping down - and I really like that! UK for me :D
Rea says: I find myself a bit torn about this one. I’m not really overly fond of covers with photographed models on the cover like the US one but the UK is lacking something too. The Rose on it makes me think of Beauty and the Beast, while really it’s supposed to be portraying Rose, the main character (or at least I assume it is).I think I’m going to go with the UK one, though I have no clear reason why.

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK

version.

Tara’s Says: I like both covers. They both have their unique thing about them which makes me want to buy them. The US one has a girl and then the title is sideways, whereas on the UK one there are flowers the title is the right way up - where it should be. They are both so pretty, but I will go with UK just because the title is easier to read; I don’t have to tilt my head. So UK wins!

Rea says: There is absolutely no contest here. I suppose that the US cover is pretty enough in its own right, though I’m not sure it’d ever really attract my attention. The UK cover, though, is absolutely gorgeous. When I saw this book in the store, I bought it without even looking at the blurb because I just wanted this amazing cover on my shelves (luckily the story is just as good as the cover!). UK for me.

The Cover Wars: Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone

This week, we will be comparing the UK and US covers of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K.Rowling.

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK

version.

Tara Says: This is so hard because they are both kind of cartoony and both portray bits of the book. The UK one is the one I knew about and I have seen so many times. It has the train in which he takes to arrive at the school, Hogwarts. The US one shows him flying on his broomstick. This is really hard so I’m just going to go with the one I have seen the most which is the UK one.

Rea says: I realise that in this case my culture has formed me to be more partial to one cover, that obviously being the UK cover. I love this cover. I always have done. There’s another version of it with Dumbledore on the cover and I have that one, too, though that version is in Latin (don’t ask why I have this book in Latin when no one in my family has ever studied the language). I just love the colours on it too – it’s bright, it makes sure your attention has no possibility of wandering elsewhere, and I just prefer the style of the art to that of the US cover. Plus, it’s the philosopher’s stone, damn it, not the sorcerer’s! UK all the way!

The Cover Wars: The Name of the Star

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK

version.

Tara Says: They both are completely different and I do like them both. The UK cover has a girl and it’s black and plain but I really like the style of the title. The US one has the girl lying down and a foggy bit with a man standing there and it just makes me want to read it way more than the UK one, so US wins for me.


Rea says: In this case, it just comes down to which cover attracts me more. I’m trying to put my finger on why the UK cover doesn’t really work for me: I think it’s because it’s a bit too busy for my tastes, but don’t hold me to that. I like the relative simplicity and the fogged-over look of the US cover. It creates a better feel of the story for me. US for me.

The Cover Wars: Ash

Tara Says: They both look really stunning and beautiful as they both have the girl and something which just makes it special… But the UK one is brighter and colourful, which makes me want to read that the most, so UK for me.

Rea says: The UK cover is really very pretty with the glass slippers being an obvious giveaway as to the book’s subject. The art really draws my eye. I find, however, that the gothic, lost look of the US covers draws my attention better. US for me.

The Cover Wars: Partials

Rea of Rea's Reading and Reviews and I decided to get together to do a weekly meme where we would compare covers of the UK editions of books with those of the US editions.

The aim of this is to just have a bit of fun. We put ourselves in the position where we see both of these books side by side in the bookstore. Which would we choose? Why that one and not the other?

This week, we will be comparing the UK and US covers of Partials by Dan Wells.

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK

version.

Tara Says: The covers are really similar apart from a few differences. The UK one is darker than and doesn’t really stand out as much as the US one, which has brighter colours and the title stands out more, so US for me.

Rea says: This is a case where the difference between the covers is really very small. It’s all about which shading you prefer. Personally, I prefer the more natural, yellowy-browns to the purples. US for me.

The Cover Wars: The Gathering

Rea of Rea's Reading and Reviews and I decided to get together to do a weekly meme where we would compare covers of the UK editions of books with those of the US editions.

The aim of this is to just have a bit of fun. We put ourselves in the position where we see both of these books side by side in the bookstore. Which would we choose? Why that one and not the other?

This week, we will be comparing the UK and US covers of The Gathering by Kelley Armstrong. I have read and loved this book so much :D.

The First book is the US version and the Second one is the UK

version.

Tara says: They are both pretty in different ways. The US one has a pretty girl on it and great colours, which make me think the book will be mysterious and good. The UK one is green and different. The girl inside the girl is a good and strange idea but that strange idea has made me go for the UK one.

Rea says: I have to admit that in this case I’m not particularly fond of the UK cover with the girl inside the girl. I like the imagery of nature with the forest and the birds, but overall the cover doesn’t really work for me. In contrast, I find that I am rather fond of the US cover, though I couldn’t say why the girl’s lips are so red! US for me.

The Cover Wars: Looking for Alaska

Tara says: The US version looks old fashioned a bit, and a little on the boring side. The UK cover is amazing and just stunning. I love the fact that there’s water with a heart in it. Everything that the UK version has, the US doesn’t. It’s UK for me.

Rea says: I think that Looking for Alaska is a case where the US and UK covers are just as appealing. I like the colours on the UK cover, but I’m not really sure what sort of emotion it’s supposed to instil in me. The US cover has the sort of imagery that you can’t mistake. I really like how much comes through from the simple image of a blown out candle. It’s the sort of image that says a thousand words. US for me.
